At some point, during their time at St. Mary's some children may have misunderstood a concept in either reading, maths or writing. Therefore these children need a  progressive intervention that will get them back on track. Here are the interventions we use at St.Mary's.

1st Class @ Number

This aims to help children who have moderate difficulties in mathematics to make faster progress and to catch up with their peers. It is supported by Edge Hill University. It focuses on key aspects of number, drawing on research into the mathematics that causes the most difficulties for young children.

Your child will:

· Learn through a Post Office theme, using letters, parcels, postcards and house numbers to support their maths.

· Write postcards to tell their teacher about their achievements.

· Think about, talk about and share their maths in order to learn and enjoy maths, therefore  increasing their confidence.

· Learn through counting, calculating and place value.

· Learn through practical methods using equipment.

Rapid Reading

This aims to help children who struggle with their reading, enabling them to practise and embed their reading skills and develop the techniques of comprehension.

Stages 1-3

Your child will:

· Use a set of finely levelled fiction and non fiction reading books – each text is written using many high frequency words.

· Use the computer with speech recognition software for reading practice.

· Have assessment texts to monitor their reading progress.

· Support with reading in one to one reading sessions and guided reading sessions.

· Build on their phonetic knowledge.

· Practise spelling the high frequency words from memory.

· Develop comprehension skills for recall and inference.

Stages 4-6

Your child will:

         · Use a set of high interest fiction and non-fiction reading books which are designed to inspire struggling readers.

· Use motivating speech recognition software for reading practice      .

· Use short texts where chunked text boxes divide the text so it is not too daunting.

· Have assessment texts to monitor their reading progress.

· Support with reading in one to one reading sessions and guided reading sessions.

· Consolidate word-level work.

· Develop comprehension skills for recall and inference and analysis of phonic features.

· Take part in quizzes in order to revisit the text, and help develop comprehension and word level skills.

Springboard 6

The aim of these Maths sessions are to ensure that they are secure level 4’s at the end of Key Stage Two.

Your child will:

• Use informal written methods to explain their answers.
• Use a variety of strategies and methods to support and enhance their ability to answer level 4 and level 5 questions.
•  Order a set of decimal numbers
• Use the inverse relationship between multiplication and division
• Represent a remainder as a fraction
• Solve word problems
• Develop calculator skills
• Express percentages as simple fractions and fractions as percentages
• Calculate percentages
• Use a calculator to convert a fraction into a decimal
• Recognise where a shape will be after a reflection in a mirror line

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is designed for children aged five or six, who are the lowest achieving in literacy after their first year of school. These children are often not able to read the simplest of books or even write their own name before the programme. 82% of children after Reading Recovery are able to read and write within the appropriate band for their age.

Your child will:

· Have one to one lessons with a Reading Recovery teacher.

· Be assessed to understand what they can do and what they need to learn. This will be different for each children.

· Be provided with an individual programme of learning for 20 weeks, 5 sessions a week. 

· Go home with books and sentence puzzles.

Precision Teaching

The aim of these daily sessions is to enable those children who may struggle with spellings, sight words, phonic sounds, number bonds, times tables and mental facts, to retain them through repetition and over learning.

Rapid Maths

Rapid Maths is an exciting course providing enjoyable and well-structured materials for children aged 6 to 12 who have difficulty with mathematics, and in particular with arithmetic.

Success @ Arithmetic

Success @ Arithmetic is a calculation based intervention for learners in Key Stage Two who struggle with arithmetic and written methods.

Speech and Language

Children who are diagnosed with having speech and language difficulties or delay are referred to the Speech and Language Therapy Service with parental consent. They work on defined targets in school with specially trained staff and may also attend clinic. A Speech and Language Therapist will assess their progress on a termly basis and liaise with the SENCO regarding future targets and intervention.
